Working Girl v. The Weekend | The Makeup Transition
by Guest Glossist Rachel Bowie | The Rachel Papers
Beauty magnate Helena Rubinstein once said, “Adjust your makeup to the light in which you wear it.” I love this advice. I take it as a personal reminder to always contemplate the day ahead, and think about the small changes I can make to my beauty routine so that I put my best face forward, no matter what situation—or light—I find myself in.
My biggest challenge? Work versus weekend makeup. These days, your daily schedule can change with the drop of an email, a text message, a Tweet. To manage, I spent a portion of one weekend organizing the key products I use into a three-bag beauty system: one for the workday, one for the weekend, and one for touch-ups of every kind. It’s my own grab-and-go beauty system. The ultimate goal? Be prepared.
This bag contains the essentials. I want to achieve a professional and polished look in ten products or less. For the face: I swear by Estée Lauder’s Even Skintone Illuminator and their Double Wear Light foundation. Both products work miracles — they even out redness and act as a brightener for my entire face. On my eyes, I rely on a three-shade palette of mauves from Laura Mercier. Truth be told, I never thought about purple for the work day, but I learned: a touch of color — applied with a light enough touch — can really make your eyes pop. I apply Estée Lauder’s Double Wear liner to give definition to my lids that lasts, and clean up any mistakes with Stay Don’t Stray Concealer from Benefit (bonus: this product works as an eye primer, too). Finally, mascara. I love the Supernova Mascara from Fresh. Add a shimmer of blush from Nars, a touch of lip gloss in Pomegranate from Korres, and boom. You’re out the door.
Variety is the theme of most weekends spent in New York, and I want the makeup I wear to reflect that. Most importantly, a lengthy beauty routine on Saturday and Sunday mornings will only get in the way of my plans. My weekend bag is built around the two products I know I need and can’t live without: Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20, and my mascara from Fresh. I build on those two with my Stay Don’t Stray Concealer, and a touch of Beauty Booster Lip Balm from Trish McEvoy. This lip treatment works as a gloss and lip plumper all in one (it also has a lovely, minty scent). If time is on my side, I’ll sweep a base eye color over my lids to even out any redness, but that’s it. Simple and sweet. Especially as the humidity in New York starts to set in, these products are all I need to get by.
My on-the-go touch up bag is where the magic happens. I never leave home without it. I carry these products in a Toss Cosmetics bag featuring an Audrey Hepburn quote, “The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” Here, you’ll find quick fixes for beauty mistakes (q-tips, makeup remover wipes from Garnier) and easy trends to amp up the glam (a bright pink lipstick from Trish McEvoy, a shimmer palette from Bobbi Brown). Whether it’s after-work drinks, or Saturday night dinner at a posh new restaurant, this bag has the products that will instantly spruce up my look.
